A Message From Nhuvia D’Alfonso

I walk for my daughter (a 29 weeker) and all the families affected by prematurity. On November 23, 2016 I gave birth to my daughter Stella at 29 weeks. Our baby girl was in distress due to a severely twisted umbilical cord and had to be delivered immediately. My husband and I were terrified to say the least, but thank God our baby fought through many challenges inside and outside of the womb. Our post partum course was unexpected and the hardest thing I've ever faced in my life. We spent 3 months in 2 neonatal intensive care units (NICUs). Our time in both NICUs was filled with many ups and downs, but we got through with the help of family, friends, co-workers, strangers, and the AMAZING medical staff. This experience has opened my eyes to what many families go through. Thanks to the generosity of the Ronald McDonald House and the surrounding communities we were able to stay close to Stella when she was transferred to The Maria Fareri Children’s Hospital due to respiratory failure.

At Ronald McDonald House of the Greater Hudson Valley we envision a world where all children have access to the medical care they need, and their families are fully supported and actively involved in their children’s care.  Thanks to our community of supporters we can offer families compassionate care by creating and running programs aimed at improving the health and well-being of sick children and their families.

When a child is battling a medical crisis, our House provides families with all the comforts of home and eases some of the burdens they face every day. Together, we continue to enable access to medical care for seriously ill children, allowing a family-centered care approach to treatment and giving families what they need most during this critical time -– each other.
